Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between a traditional escape room and a VR escape room?

Think of it as the difference between a stage play and a blockbuster movie. Traditional escape rooms are fantastic, hands-on experiences where you solve puzzles in a physically built set. We love them, but they are limited by four walls.

A free-roam virtual reality escape room transports you and your team to an entirely different world. You’re not just in a room themed like a spaceship; you are on a spaceship, floating in zero gravity. The environments are vast, dynamic, and can feature challenges and special effects that would be impossible to create in real life.

I get motion sickness. Is virtual reality a good idea for me?

This is the most common concern we hear, and it’s a valid one based on older VR technology. However, the high-end, free-roam VR experiences we review, like those at ZONE 518, are a different beast. Because you are physically walking around and your real-world movements match what you see in the headset, the causes of motion sickness are eliminated. Venues confidently guarantee no motion sickness, and in our experience, they’re right.

What is "free-roam" VR? Do I just stand in one place?

Absolutely not! “Free-roam” is the magic ingredient. It means you are completely untethered—no wires, no cables. You and your team walk freely and naturally around a large, open play space, exploring the virtual world with your own two feet. You can duck behind cover, walk around a puzzle to inspect it from all angles, and see your friends walking right beside you. It’s this freedom of movement that makes the experience so incredibly immersive.

Are VR escape rooms good for kids and families in the Albany area?

Yes! Many of the virtual reality adventures in the Capital Region are perfect for families. While some themes are more intense, many are designed for a wide audience. For example, games like Runaway Train are suitable for ages 10 and up. It’s a fantastic bonding experience and a unique activity that kids, teens, and adults can all genuinely enjoy together.

Are these experiences scary? I’m looking for spooky things to do in Albany.

It depends on the game you choose! Many adventures are not scary at all, focusing on themes like sci-fi, fantasy, or action. However, if you are looking for spooky escape rooms in Albany, there are definitely options for you. Manor of Escape, for example, is a fantastic horror-themed game that’s more about spooky atmosphere than cheap jump scares.

For those seeking maximum fear, the Capital Region has great seasonal attractions like Double M Haunted Hayrides in Ballston Spa or Field of Horrors in Troy, but VR offers a unique, year-round way to get your spooky fix.

What should I wear to a VR escape room?

Dress for comfort and light activity. You’ll be moving around more than you think! We recommend comfortable, short-sleeved clothing and, most importantly, close-toed shoes. You’ll be wearing a headset, so keep that in mind when planning your hairstyle for the day.

I wear glasses. Can I still play?

Yes. While contact lenses are often more comfortable under the headset, most modern VR headsets can accommodate glasses. The staff at the venue will help you get the fit just right to ensure you have a clear and comfortable experience.

How do we book an experience you've reviewed?

We are an independent review site. To book an adventure, you should contact the venue directly. All of our reviews include a link to the venue’s website (like ZONE 518 for Runaway Train and Manor of Escape) where you can see available time slots and book your tickets online. We highly recommend booking in advance, especially for weekends!

How much do VR escape rooms in the Capital Region cost?

Prices are generally comparable to high-quality traditional escape rooms. Based on venues like ZONE 518 in Albany, you can expect ticket prices to range from about $27.50 to $49.50 per person for a 45-to-60-minute adventure. Considering the level of technology and immersion, we think it’s an incredible value.

Do you only review VR escape rooms?

Our mission is to find the most innovative and immersive escape rooms in the Capital Region. That search has naturally led us to focus on free-roam VR, because it’s where most of the groundbreaking design is happening right now. However, we are escape room enthusiasts at heart. If we hear about a truly exceptional traditional room in Albany, Troy, Schenectady, or anywhere else in the 518 that pushes the boundaries, you can bet we’ll be there to check it out.
